If you were to put all your fingers into your mouth either side and pull your lips up and out stretching them as much as you can bear and then imagine carrying on stretching even more I'd say that's close to the sensation I felt, but obviously in a different part of the body. When you do this to your mouth yourself you automatically stop stretching when the burning gets too sore. The hardest part about a baby crowning is that you can't stop, you have to overide and ignore the natural reaction to stop pushing and stretching and instead make yourself carry on pushing through that pain to get the baby out. Its difficult because your mind of course tells you to stop doing anything that is causing you pain. But you have to ignore that urge to stop and just keep pushing through it. It burns then stings but that stinging/ burning pain lasts just seconds and then the baby is out. Something like olive oil massaged regularly around the area in the weeks before birth helps your skin stretch more easily. I did this and despite having three large babies, it still burned like crazy but I never tore.
